Portal - Video Games

Portal is a single-player first-person action/puzzle video game first released as part of The Orange Box collection of games released in October 2007 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The game was included along with more established titles Half Life 2, and Team Fortress 2, but, somewhat unexpectedly, Portal became a standout on its own, with many gamer's buying the box set for Portal alone. It was released as a standalone game for the PC on Steam in October 2007 for $19.99, and retail games appearing in stores on April 9th, 2008. Portal was released on Xbox Live! arcade on October 22, 2008 for 1200 points.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

•Well thought out gameplay
•Excellent script
•Cheap - $20 on Steam
•Atmospheric soundscape
•Excellent learning curve - not much handholding, but you can figure out everything as you go along
•Available on Xbox Live! arcade for ~ $15

Cons:

•Short
•Voices and sounds can be loud and annoying at times
•Lack of colors

More information

Gameplay

In Portal, the player controls the character, Chell, from a first person perspective as she is challenged to navigate through a series of rooms using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device ("portal gun"). The portal gun can create two distinct portal ends, orange and blue. Neither is specifically an entrance or exit; all objects that travel through the one portal will exit through the other with no change in momentum magnitude. If subsequent portal ends are created, the previously created portal of the same color is closed. Not all surfaces are able to accommodate a portal, and any attempt to do so will not affect the existing portals. Chell can also pick up objects, though she can only throw objects a short distance (affected by the player's momentum). These objects ("Aperture Science Weighted Storage Cubes" or a "Weighted Companion Cube") can be used to press large buttons to open doors or activate platforms, but barriers (known as "Material Emancipation Grids" or 'fizzlers', as described by the audio commentary) at the end of each test chamber or within certain test chambers prevent the player character from carrying such objects beyond them. Passage through these fields also closes any open portals, and portals cannot be fired through these fields

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Video Games

Metal Gear Solid 4 is the fourth installment of the critically acclaimed, and fan-obsessed Metal Gear Solid series, which is part of the larger Metal Gear universe. Hideo Kojima, the creator of the series, claims MGS4 is the last game that will feature the iconic protagonist Solid Snake who now finds himself old and decaying. In development for four years, MGS4 was anticipated by fans as the first and last next-gen installment of their favorite series with a budget to match the epic expectations.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

•Fantastic graphics
•Unparalleled presentation
•Satisfying conclusion
•Great attention to detail
•A number of new innovations to the series and genre

Cons:

•Cinematics can be very long, especially later on in the game
•Gameplay hasn't changed enough for modern standards

More information

Story

Metal Gear games are notorious for their convoluted, intricate and deep narrative that mixes serious themes such as war and free will, with supernatural elements. MGS4 takes place years after the events of MGS2 as Solid Snake who is rapidly aging since he is a clone is attempting to stop his rival Liquid Snake (who has possessed Revolver Ocelot through a transplanted arm) from taking over the world with nano-machine controlled soldiers.

Traditionally the story in MGS games have been told through "CODEC" conversations where two people spend copious amounts of time talking to one another with animated avatars. In response to criticism the traditional CODEC conversations have been replaced by full real-time cinematics. Some of the story presentation is presented while playing the game, most of the cinematics are non-interactive.

Gameplay

MGS4 introduces several refinements and changes to the traditional Metal Gear Solid gameplay, while retaining many of the core elements that make the series. The biggest change comes in the gameplay perspective which now defaults to a regular third-person view from behind Snake's back. Other camera angles are available including an over-the-shoulder view, the birds-eye angle, and even a first person view.

Snake has more tools and weapons at his disposal including the OctoCamo which is a cameleon-like suit that automatically changes colors and patterns to match his surrounding. The Solid Eye and Metal Gear MK.II are two other tools that Snake can use to help his progress.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 - Video Games

The game has the player take the role of a male high-school student who joins up with other members of SEES—the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad—to attack Shadows and other beings that emerge during the "Dark Hour", a time period between each day which only few humans are aware of. The player uses weapons and magical abilities gained by the use of "Personas" to defeat foes in a turn-based combat system. An iconic feature of the game is the method by which the members of SEES release their Personas: by firing an Evoker, a gun-like object, at their head, which does no damage but causes sufficient emotional stress to cause the Persona to appear. In addition to typical RPG elements, the game includes elements of dating simulation games as the player character progresses day by day through a school year, making friends and relationships that improve the strength of his Personas in battle.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

Cons:
Do you agree?
•You can't stay in the dark hour forever otherwise your characters will get tired and will be unable to battle.

More information

The Main Character, a teenager who was orphaned as a young boy, returns to the city of his childhood. Shortly after transferring to Gekkoukan High School, he is attacked by Shadows—creatures that feed on the minds of their victims. The assault awakens his Persona, Orpheus, his only chance at defeating these creatures of the night. He soon discovers that he shares this special ability with other students at his new school; each is armed with an Evoker, a special handgun that they fire at their heads that does not harm them physically but causes emotional stress in order to summon forth their own Persona. The Main Character learns that he is unique among the other members, being able to use multiple Personas and that he is guided by the formation of Social Links to improve his power. From them he learns of the "Dark Hour," a hidden time that exists between one day and the next, swarming with Shadows. He joins the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (SEES), and with his new friends, confronts the threat of the Shadows by exploring Tartarus, a huge, chaotic tower that appears in the place of their school every Dark Hour.

After signing a contract in which he "accepts his fate of his own free will," the Main Character battles with the other members of SEES against the Greater Shadows, incarnations with traits and appearances similar to those of the first twelve Major Arcana of the Tarot. The group is told by Shuji Ikutsuki, the adult supervisor of the group, that defeating all the major Shadows will end the Dark Hour.

Kingdom Hearts - Video Games

Kingdom Hearts begins on Destiny Islands, where Sora, Riku, and Kairi live. The three friends want to leave the islands to explore new worlds and have prepared a raft for this purpose. One night, the islands are attacked by darkness and shadow creatures—the Heartless. Sora seeks out his friends, finding Riku, who disappears into darkness. At the same time, Sora obtains the Keyblade. The islands are destroyed, and Sora is left adrift. Meanwhile, King Mickey has left his world to deal with the increasing darkness and left instructions for mage Donald and knight Goofy to find the "key".

More information

Donald and Goofy use a Gummi Ship to travel to Traverse Town, to where Sora has drifted. Sora encounters the shadow creatures again, and meets Leon, who explains the shadow creatures are Heartless, beings that consume hearts, and that the Keyblade is the only weapon capable of defeating them. A man named Ansem, the leader of Leon's home world, is said to have studied the Heartless. Sora meets Donald and Goofy and the three decide to travel together: Donald and Goofy to find Mickey, and Sora to find Kairi and Riku. The three go to various worlds based on Disney films, finding that the Keyblade also locks "Keyholes", passages the Heartless use to take the heart of a world. A group of Disney villains, led by Maleficent, seek out the seven Princesses of Heart to unlock the Keyhole that leads to Kingdom Hearts, a repository of knowledge and power and the source of all hearts. This group includes Riku, whom Maleficent promises she will help in finding Kairi. Maleficent sows distrust in Riku, telling him Sora has abandoned him and Kairi for new friends and the Keyblade. An increasingly antagonistic Riku finds Kairi's body, but cannot find her heart.

Ninja Gaiden 2 - Video Games

Ninja Gaiden 2 is the true sequel and first next-gen installment to the critically acclaimed series. This game features the return of Ryu Hayabusa as he travels the world and kills a ton of monsters and bad guys along the way. The core gameplay remains largely unchanged from the first 3D Ninja Gaiden with a punishing difficulty, fast action, and an unparalleled variety of killing moves. Most changes in the game are an enhancement and amplification of previous designs, moves are more brutal, the action is substantially faster, the game is gorier, and the harder difficulty is even harder.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

•Super fast action
•Obliteration techniques are very satisfying
•Great level progression, no backtracking
•Unrelenting enemies force you to come up with innovative techniques and strategies
•Large variety in weapons

Cons:

•Unpolished experience
•Big slowdown in some specific instances
•Enemies can be TOO aggressive
•Still too difficult for casual players
•Still has camera problems

More information

Story

Ninja Gaiden's story is largely uninspired and quite silly, intentional or not. This time around the Black Spider Clan is attempting to ressurect the "arch fiend" to take over or destroy the world, and only Ryu can stop them. The story is told through a combination of in-game cutscenes and full motion cinematics, and works largely as a little filler to drive Ryu from one slaughterfest to the next.

Gameplay

The first 3D Ninja Gaiden game gained notoriety for the huge move-list and brutal action. In NG2 Ryu has 7 melee weapons available to him, each with one or two level of upgrades and a move-set with dozens of combinations. There are also 4 projectile weapons, including the popular boomerang shuriken, and the return of the ninpo (magic) arts for clearing rooms of enemies.

One of the bigger changes to the game is the introduction of cutting off limbs. From the surface this appears to be a more cosmetic change, but in the higher levels of play and difficulty the severed limbs and accompanying obliteration techniques become very important.

Another significant change comes in the way you can change your weapons and use items. The previous games required you to enter a menu screen and select your items from there, now you can select items just by using the d-pad which is a more streamlined process.

Wii Fit - Video Games

Wii Fit is an exercise simulation game (aka exergaming) in development by Nintendo that makes use of the Wii Balance Board peripheral. It was announced at E3 in July 2007 and has been described as "way to help get families exercising together". There will be over 40 activities included in the game broken up into four categories: (1) Aerobic Exercises, (2) Muscle Conditioning, (3) Yoga Poses, and (4) Balance games. It was released in Europe on May 8, 2008 and will be released in North America on May 21st, 2008 for $89.99 with the inclusion of a Wii Balance Board.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

•Innovative pressure sensitive gamepad
•Integrates Mii characters into gameplay
•Measures BMI
•Tracks your fitness progress with "Wii Fitness Age"
•Encourages people to live an active lifestyle
•Inexpensive, only $69.99 with Wii Balance Board
•Makes exercise fun
•Helps you use the proper form with animations, tips, and feedback based on the Balance Board
•Effective in-game personal trainer

Cons:

•Can only track four people's fitness ages.
•Uses BMI to determine fitness age but doesn't account for different body structures and muscle mass
•You can't input other biometric data that you've attained on your own (% body fat for example)
•May label children as "obese"

More information

Activities

•yoga exercises
•press ups
•step aerobics - done in sync with background music
•hula-hooping
•heading soccer balls
•ball-rolling mini game
•ski-jumping

Wii Fit will track your "Wii Fitness Age" in a similar manner as "Brain Age" was tracked in Brain Age and Big Brain Academy for the DS and Wii. There is speculation that Wii Fit may utilize the WiiConnect24 feature to help doctors and fitness professionals interact with patients and clients.

The Wii Balance Board will be included with the game and is expected to be reused by other games as they become available. The Balance Board is similar to a bathroom scale and includes multiple sensors that can determine its user's (1) center of gravity, and (2) BMI (Body Mass Index). These reading are used as part of the gameplay. There may be a larger "American sized" balance board released in the US after initial feedback is received from the upcoming Japanese launch.

World Of Warcraft

Design a character from one of two factions, the Alliance or the Horde. There are eight races to choose from (all races can be both Female and Male) in the basic game and ten races with "The Burning Crusade" expansion. Currently there are eight playing classes (see below), but this is subject to change when the new expansion "Wrath of the Lich King" is released later in 2008.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

•Customizable interface with addon mods
•Great interface
•Excellent, interesting, and unique storylines
•Make your own adventure (not stuck on one storyline)
•Huge playerbase (amount of people playing)
•Excellent customer service in the game and on the phone
•Voice emotes and dances unique to your choice of race

Cons:

•Your friends might make fun of you (but who cares? its a great game)
•Frequent Updates (interface mod incompatibility)
•A lot of obnoxious people (most people have used this game as an entry point into the MMO scene)
•Different versions are tied to their regions, i.e. an American version of the game cannot play on European Servers and vice versa.
•Monthly subscription fee (about $15)

More information

You basically roam around inside the dynamic online world called "Azeroth" killing beasts, monsters, giants, dragons and even other players of the opposing faction if you so wish, while completing tasks (quests) to earn virtual money and items to improve your character and take it to the next level.

There are currently a total of 70 levels in World of Warcraft, you start at level one and as you progress in the game you gain levels, making your character more powerful with better character statistics (strength, stamina, intelligence, spirit and agility) and abilities/spells (depending on what class you choose/roll).

World of Warcraft is the most played game of the MMORPGs, connecting a huge amount of realms over several continents and countries. With over ten million subscribers --and growing-- you're sure not to adventure alone, but can of course if you prefer not to adventure with other people.

World of Warcraft has always been the gateway MMO for a lot of people new to the genre, it is a fairly simple game with a fast learning curve, the game only becomes as advanced as you want it to get.

The user interface is very simple and easy to understand, but for people that want a different look, or more advanced control there are custom user interfaces and interface enhancements to download from various World of Warcraft Interface sites. But for the inexperienced, the basic UI will take the new player to the highest level without any real need to change your UI.

•Draenei (BC only) (Mage, Paladin, Priest, Shaman, Warrior)

Grand Theft Auto 4

The next-generation sequel to the controversial number one selling game. Grand Theft Auto 4 has you playing as Russian immigrant, Niko, trying to escape his shady past in modern-day New York. In a break from the trend of increasingly larger worlds to explore, Rock Star opted for a more densely packed smaller game world than in San Andreas. Major improvements over the previous games come in the form of a more vibrant city, substantially improved combat mechanics, "deeper" personal relationships, fleshed out physics and animation systems, and a comprehensive online component.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

•Emergent physics system and animation with Endorphin
•A city that feels more "alive"
•Storyline or freeform abilities
•In-game cell phone is absolute genius
•New wanted system much better, no need for Pay 'N Spray
•Excellent graphics (every version gets better)
•Seamless multiplayer
•Incredible soundtrack
•Deep hand-to-hand combat system
•Characters in the game have a quality about them that makes you care for what happens
•Over the shoulder aiming works perfect

Cons:

•Limited co-op gametypes
•Awkward camera control
•Lower resolution and blurry image on the PS3 version
•Bad shadow dithering on Xbox 360 version
•Some people with certain models of the PS3 can't get past the initial cutscene
•Linear storyline
•Most buildings and objects can't be used
•Rockstar never talks about a PC release until a year after the consoles.
•Cars can be difficult to control
•Framerate issues

More information

Gameplay

GTA4 fundamentally resolves down to the basic mechanics the first incarnations pioneered - stealing cars, shooting gangsters/cops, and completing missions. The fourth main installment of the franchise refines and improves many of these fundamentals. Most notably is the change to the gun shooting mechanics, where before auto-aim played a very large role and often times frustrated players, GTA4 uses an over-the-shoulder view similar to that in Gears of War. Also similar to Gears of War is the inclusion of a cover system that lets Niko hide behind objects to avoid getting hit. Hand-to-Hand combat has also been refined with a deeper moveset, and more combos available.

Driving has taken on a more realistic feel to match the rest of the game's setting. Cars now have more distinctive weights and features that sometimes make them more difficult to drive than in previous games. Vehicles that can be driven by Niko include cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats and helicopters. Bicycles and airplanes introduced in San Andreas don't make the cut.

Setting

Rockstar is taking the game back to its roots and placing the setting in the fictitious Liberty City. This time around the city is far more realized and offers a more than passing resemblance to New York City. Four of the Five burroughs are found in the game under fictitious names, with the notable exception of Long Island. Rockstar has been quoted as saying the city is smaller than the one in GTA:San Andreas, however its far denser, making the overall amount of places you can travel to be equal. Buildings are more interactive with many containing full interiors.

Multiplayer

Grand Theft Auto 4 is the first time that online multiplayer is available to console players. Rock Star has taken cues from other modern online games and added their own GTA twist. Up to 16 players can take part in online matches that exist within the same open world of the single player. This means you can engage in one of the 16 different multiplayer modes and still travel to any part of the map, engage with civilians and do everything you can do in the regular game. Rock Star attempts to keep the interactions localized by making health and weapon respawns occur in select parts of the map.

Customization plays a large role in the multiplayer modes. Hosts are given the ability to specify the number of pedestrians available, cars in the streets, if cops are active, auto-aim settings, etc. Players themselves can also customize their digital personas with different clothing and body shape choices, the more you play, the more points you gain to unlock further customizations for your avatar.

Rock Star Social Club

Taking inspiration from Halo 3 Rock Star has a website that accompanies the game to provide statistics, community organization and other benefits to gamers. Not only do online games get logged in the social club, but extensive leaderboards and challenges for the single player game.

Differences between Xbox 360 and PS3 versions

Downloadable episodic content will be available exclusively for the Xbox 360 version. Any exclusive content/features for the PS3 version has not been announced yet.

Bee Movie: The Game

Pros
Fun, good graphics, and give you the excitement.

Cons
No Cons.

The Bottom Line
You will have the chance to do the bee movie story.

Here is the game of the movie the Bee Movie. It lets you play as Barry B. Benson and do the bee movie story. In the game, the story has some adjustments that are not in the real movie. There are 12 chapters in the game. Each chapter has 1 to 3 levels. You will have a chance to explore New Hive City, and Honex Industries (They are separated by an elevator south of J-Gates) (The exploration is not in story mode). As a bee, you must do bee jobs. Some are long, some are easy, and some are hard. There are 7 jobs available (3 at Honex Industries, and 4 at New Hive City). The 3 jobs at Honex are drafter, honeycomb collector, and honey tanks collector. In the drafter job, you must fill honey baskets that are not filled before you hit the unfilled baskets limit. In honeycomb collector, you must collect honeycombs that fall down without collecting burnt combs. You have a limit of burnt combs to collect (If you reach the limit you lose). In honey tanks collector, you must collect tanks that come to you without leaving any tank left. You have a limit of tanks that you did not collect. In New Hive City, there are 4 jobs: taxi, food delivery, racer, and mechanic jobs. In taxi job, you must collect people and send them to there destination. You will allow 1 customer at a time and there is a time limit. In food delivery job, you must deliver all the food before the time limit. In racer job, you must come 1st in all the available races against 5 opponents. In mechanic job, you must fix all the cars before the time limit. When you finish a job you will earn money. With this money, you can buy video games, new clothes, or new cars. There are badges that you can collect while playing. To see them you must enter at a portal in front of J-Gates.

Mario Kart for Nintendo Wii

Pros
Everything. Just a downright awesome game!

Cons
Maybe a couple songs, but thats it... And alot of online players play Yoshi XD

The Bottom Line
This game is simply amazing. Music, gameplay and so forth. Buy it!

That is right. It is better then Brawl! And I love Brawl. Basically, Nintendo did everything right with this game as far as gameplay, online, and so forth goes. But that isn't the review, this is!

1) Game Play 10/10 (if you have a wheel lol)
-There are three ways to play. Gamecube controller, Classic Controller, Wii Mote and Nunchuck, and Wheel Wheel! The game is meant to be played with the wheel, so I will explain how that goes first.

Wheel----First off, the wheel is nice sized and it feels comfortable in my hand. The controls are simple to. You turn the wheel to turn, hold 2 to accelerate, 1 to drift, and directional pad to throw items. Also when in the air, you 3) can shake the controller to do tricks for an added boost. It's VERY easy to use! And the most fun. Also you can press A to look backwards, but that is dangerous. If you tilt the wheel up some, your motorcycle will perform a wheelie, assuming you are riding one. 5/5

Classic Controller---You use the left analog to steer, A to accelerate, B or R to drift, L to use items, up and down on the controller pad to do a wheelie, and press the control pad while in the air to do a trick. And X to look back. Easy, but not as fun as a wheel.4/5

GC Controller--- Basically the same as the Classic controller, and as easy. 4/5

Nunchuck--- To steer you move the left analog, and to accelerate you press A. You drift by holding the back B button, and you use items by using the Z button. You tilt the wiimote to do a wheelie, and shake while in the air to do tricks. This one feels awkward and I don't suggest this method to beginners. 3/5

2) Modes 10/10
There are four modes. Grand Prix, Time Trial, Vs, and Battle. All being awesome.

Grand Prix--- Basically, you go up against 11 (or 10 if you have a buddy) computers to win the gold in each stage. At first it is easy, but in other CCs (100 and 150) the computer can be a bit cheap. But that is to be expected. It is still alot of fun though. But, it is a pain in the but trying to get the star to unlock all the characters when the comp is cheap. Still, the game is terribly fun. 4/5

Time Trial--- Kind of a relaxing one where you dont race anyone except the time. When you finish a race, you can save your ghost. And once you save you ghost, you can race him. The ghost goes through the track just like you did, exactly. And it gives you the opportunity to beat your time and get a better score. 4/5

VS.--- Basically, it is just you and your friend. Like Grand Prix, except no opponents. 5/5

Battle--- I love battle. There are two in this. Coin collect and Balloon pop. Coin mode is where you and your team must collect as many points as you can. The one to collect the most wins. And the same goes for balloon pop. You pop as many balloons as you can, and the one who pops the most wins! Heheh what is cool is after all your balloons are popped you can still go at it. God I love it... 5/5

3) Graphics 10/10
Now I know what your thinking. Compared to Brawl, the graphics are not as good. But you have to look at the bigger picture. Because of the graphics, there is no frame rate issues... Period. I am serious, for what it is, the graphics are damn beautiful. And so are the stages. The fog affect kind of helps to.

4) Stages 10/10
Seriously, there are some amazing stages in this game, some new, some old. From Moo Moo Meadows, all the way to Mario Circuit from the SNES Mario Kart. Same goes for the battle circuit levels. They bring back some old ones and bring out some new. But I think I will let you find out what those are! ;)

5) Characters 10/10
25 characters... That is amazing. Why am I surprised, especially when you can race up to 12 people at once? My girlfriend especially loves Baby Peach! LOL! But some are a lil surprising. Once again, I will let you find out who they are after you unlock them! :D

6) Music 8/10
Music is good. Granted a couple songs are a little forgetable, but some are downright catchy, Like Moo Moo meadows, Mario Circuit SNES, and Rainbow Road. Though it has some faults, it is not enough to throw anyone off.

7) Online 10/10
This is seriously the best part of this game. It is done right in every way. You can go up against people around the world in vs or battle mode and earn points. The more you win, or the better you do, the more points you earn. But that is not all! You can race friends, bring a buddy with you on the same wii as a guest, you can check ranks all over the world, and best of all... NO LAG! NOT AT ALL! NONE! NODDA! Seriously, Nintendo did Online play right for once!

Bottom Line, this game is amazing. I hear people saying that hardcore gamers will be thrown off by this game, but I don't see it. I am a hardcore gamer and this game is an absolute blast, and great for beginners as well. This game is just that good!

Naturally the title will be available from Valve's Steam digital distribution system, where each game can be purchased a la carte, though at a higher combined price.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

•Tons of content for your money
•Team Fortress 2 is an excellent multiplayer game
•Half-Life 2 is still one of the best games ever made

Cons:

•Many people already own Half-Life 2

Half-Life 2 and Episodes

Half-Life 2 released in 2004 to great critical and commercial success. The Orange Box contains the original game with updated graphics and improvements to the underlying Source engine technology. Half-Life 2 is praised for its solid physics engine with resulting physics-based puzzles, and immersive world and environments. HL2 was also ported over to the original Xbox with many features downgraded, the Xbox 360/PS3 port are nearly identical to the PC version.

Half-Life 2: Episode 1 is the previously available episodic addition to HL2. Once again you take control of Gordon Freeman, fight alongside his partner Alyx and try to take down the Combine the game's main enemy. Episode 1 reuses many of the same gameplay elements as vanilla HL2 with the addition of a few new items and weapons.

Half-Life 2: Episode 2 is a new addition to the series introduced in The Orange Box. The latest installment picks up right after the events of Episode 1, and again introduces a few new tricks to the bag. Originally slated for release as a standalone offering similar to Ep1 in Fall 2006, Episode 2 was delayed for a year and incorporated into The Orange Box release.

Portal

Originally started as a class project, Valve was so impressed by the initial demonstration of Portal that they hired the team and made the mod a standalone game. Built upon the Source engine Portal features no guns or weapons of any kind. Instead you have a "gun" that can manipulate portals, which are tiny wormholes that allow you to teleport from place to place. The game is a sequence of rooms each one being its own individual puzzle that requires you to figure out how and where to place the portals to get from the beginning to the end.

Team Fortress 2

Almost a decade in the making Team Fortress 2 was originally set for release in 1998 as the sequel to the popular Half-Life mod: Team Fortress Classic. The original game was set in a modern day military setting, and introduced the concept of class-based multiplayer where each person can choose from a different role with specialized weapons and abilities.

TF2 follows the paradigm of class based gameplay that has since become extremely popular, but goes for an entirely unique design aesthetic. The graphics are cartoony and over the top, with each class being represented by a highly stylized character. The abilities and skills of each class are limited relative to previous offerings as there are only a few weapons and skills available, however Valve added depth through the sheer number of classes and how they interact with one another. For example, pairing a medic with a heavy class grants the heavy character a major boost in health which makes them a far more formidable opponent to deal with.

Differences in Versions

Graphically Valve states that all three versions of the game will look nearly the same, though obviously a top of the line PC will win out. Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game do not support mouse and keyboard setups. Valve is directly responsible for developing the PC and Xbox 360 port, while a development team inside of EA handled the PS3 port.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

•Storyline or freeform abilities
•Excellent graphics (every version gets better)
•Emergent physics system and animation with Endorphin
•A city that feels more "alive"
•Seamless multiplayer

Cons:

•Limited co-op gametypes
•Rockstar never talks about a PC release until a year after the consoles

Halo 3

Halo 3 is one of the most anticipated games for 2007 as the series that defined the Xbox makes its debut onto the next generation successor. This third installment marks the conclusion of the Halo trilogy and ending of this particular story arc. Bungie has been developing the game for over 3 years and in a marked difference from other Microsoft Game Studios titles is using their own engine as opposed to Unreal Engine 3. Bungie is also incorporating a large number of substantial new features such as saved films, the Forge system, and 4-player online co-op while keeping all of the old game modes of Halo 2.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

•Extraordinary replay value in single player
•Online co-op with 4 people
•Tons of features and value for your money
•Satisfying conclusion to the series
•Massive scale in battles and environments
•New weapons and equipment add more depth to already deep gameplay
•Perfectly balanced multiplayer

Cons:

•Doesn't innovate very much
•Forge mode can be frustrating.
•Causes some 360's to crash, and must be sent in for repair
•Graphics are Halo 2 in HD
•Single player taken by itself isn't very compelling

More information

Gameplay

The Halo series revolves around the design concept of an extremely refined 30 seconds of gameplay continually repeated. This gameplay involves giving the player tools and environment to fight against their enemies. With Halo 3 Bungie is expanding the core mechanics introduced with the first two games by expanding the range of tools at your disposal and the kind of tools that are available. Players run, jup, shoot, use vehicles, and use elements in their environment to move around the levels and kill their enemies. The player has a rechargeable shield that automatically refills after a few seconds have passed without the player being hit by enemy fire.

Weapons, Vehicles and Equipment

All the trademark weapons of the Halo franchise return with new weapons being added that represent the Brute enemy's arsenal. A new class of weapons is being added known as "support" that are heavier tools of destruction that put the player in a 3rd person view, and cause the player to move slower.

A new class of tools is introduced with H3 called "equipment". These items can support you and your teammates, or hinder your opponents. Shields, portable lifts, RADAR jammers, are examples of equipment that can be deployed in the field.

Vehicles make a return in Halo 3 with the classic warthog once again taking a prominent role. Similar to the weapons new vehicles are added that represent the Brute's arsenal.

Campaign

The campaign mode sees you playing through the last chapter of the Halo arc started with the games, and the three novels. The tag line of Halo 3 is "Finish the Fight" with the ending of Halo 2 seeing Master Chief heading back to Earth to defend humanity from a full scale Covenant invasion. Being the ending in the series many fans expect H3 to answer many of the questions involving the Forerunners and the purpose of the Halos and the Ark.

The campaign is mission based seeing the player traverse the landscape accomplishing the assigned mission objectives, usually in the form of destroying something or rescuing something else. Story is relayed through cutscenes and in-game acting and dialog.

Similar to both of the previous games, the entire campaign can be played cooperatively with another player on the same Xbox 360. And for the first time in the series up to four players can go through the campaign cooperatively over Xbox Live.

For the first time Bungie is creating what they call a "meta-game" around the campaign mode that tracks the player's accomplishments through a particular level and assigns them points and medals. Performing more advanced maneuvers such as double kills, and head shots result in more points. Leaderboards will be available for the overall score, and leaderboards for individual level scores are also available.

Multiplayer

Multiplayer is a large part of the Halo franchise and Bungie is expanding the mode for Halo 3. Similar to Halo 2 multiplayer games can be found by joining a friend's custom game, or through the Matchmaking party system. New for Halo 3 are public custom games which let you join other custom games similar to a server list that don't affect your ranking. The party system sees you joining your friends in a group and going through the matchmaking process together, so you always join the same games.

All the new vehicles, weapons and equipment introduced will be available for multiplayer. And similar to H2 there will be a multitude of game modes available for customization for custom games, alongside an ever changing playlist of ranked matchmaking modes.

The ranking system which tracks your kills and other accomplishments gets factored into the Matchmaking system to try and match you up with similarly ranked players so people get a "fair" game. People who continually drop out of a game will have their rankings negatively affected reducing their ability to find games with "good" players.

Forge

Forge is a new kind of mode that has a significant impact on the multiplayer game. With Forge mode activated players can take on the role of an entity outside the game and manipulate the level and rules of the game in a variety of ways. Spawning weapons, vehicles and other items is already confirmed. At any time players can switch between the Forge mode and normal playing resulting in new ways of playing multiplayer.

New levels can not be created from scratch, and level geometry can not be modified. Forge simply allows you to create and move items around existing multiplayer maps and change their settings. Modified levels and rules can be saved and played through as a normal multiplayer game. Custom creations can even be shared with other players on your Friend's list and beyond. Bungie has stated they'll have a website dedicated to the best Forge games and levels and let people download new Forge levels to play on their own system.

Saved Films

Halo was an extremely popular title to use for Machinima, films created using video games. The popular video series Red vs Blue is an example of Machinima, though others also exist. Bungie is supporting these kind of film makers by integrating the film making capabilities into the game itself. Players can record, save, and playback any of their gaming sessions either in the campaign or multiplayer modes. Saved films aren't actual video files, but instead scripts that playback within the game engine itself. This allows you to watch a saved film from any angle and even manipulate the camera on the fly. Saved films can be shared with friends, and uploaded to Bungie's servers with the best films being available for anyone to download.

Editions

Halo 3 will be offered in three different editions in increasing forms of fan service.

Standard Edition ($59.99) - Game disc and manual

Collector's Edition ($69.99) - adds an Interactive Xbox 360 disc containing new themes and gamer pictures, and the Beastiarum which is a hard cover book detailing the flora and fauna in the Halo universe

Legendary Edition ($129.99) - adds Legendary DVD which contains even more exclusive content, and a Master Chief Helmet to hold all three discs.

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the eighth game released under the Call of Duty franchise, and true to its name, is the fourth main game in the series. While COD3 was developed by a separate studio, COD4 is developed by the game's original designers: Infinity Ward. Thus far the Call of Duty franchise has focused exclusively in the World War 2 era, with the fourth release being the first happening in modern times, and also the first to achieve a mature rating. Similar to the other main releases in the series, COD4 places a heavy emphasis on both the single player campaign and multiplayer portions of the game. Both sides feature new additions to the series, and some new additions to the FPS genre entirely.

Pros & Cons
Pros:

•Insane graphics
•Tons of action going on
•Fantastic presentation
•Very deep multiplayer
•Smooth 60FPS that never slows down
•Custom classes makes each player an individual
•Ranking up and unlocking makes you want to keep playing

Cons:

•Multiplayer is unfriendly to new players
•Single player is short (6-8 hours)
•In-game bonuses make unfair games even worse

More information

Gameplay

Call of Duty is a traditional first person shooter set in a real world setting. You use real guns and fight in realistic areas and locations. Unlike other modern FPS games releasing in 2007, COD does not feature a dedicated cover system, but instead uses the same crouch/prone positioning system in earlier COD games. New to the series is the introduction of a ballistics model, this means that bullet strength is analyzed and can impact the environment, even shooting through certain materials making cover a relative thing.

Campaign

Following the tradition of the franchise, COD4 has you take control of multiple infantry-men fighting from different perspectives of the same war. You'll take control of an American and a British soldier as they try to take down a rogue Arab terrorist, and corrupt Russian military general. Most of the action sees you taking a role in a tight squad in battles that aren't as big as WW2 ones, but still involve dozens of enemies at any one time. The story takes place over the course of 12 different levels and is told through the use of realtime cutscenes, events unfolding during the levels, and certain details fleshed out in the briefings between missions. Level events can occur even if you're not around to see them, meaning you can miss parts of they story if you're not at the right place in the right time. After the main campaign has been completed an arcade mode unlocks that is scored based giving you multipliers and extra points for stringing kill combos together. This is similar to Halo 3's metagame.

Multiplayer

Multiplayer has been a huge part of the Call of Duty series since the beginning, and Modern Warfare is no different. One of the big new changes with COD4 is the introduction of upgrades. As you play more games and accomplish goals such as killing certain number of enemies, you'll rise in military rank - from a lowly soldier to Captian and beyond. As you rise in rank you gain access to more abilities and "perks" as they're known in the game. You have three slots for perks, each slot with its own set of perks that are unlocked as you rise in ranks. Weapons can level up as well. The more you use a particular weapon and gain more kills, the more experience you get with the weapon which unlocks more upgrades and accessory options letting you add more ammo or lower the recoil. All of these upgrade options come together through the game's custom class mechanism where you can choose every aspect of your character's loadout including weapons, grenades and abilities. Similar to other games there are preset classes available, though the main focus is on creating your own that suits your playstyle the best.

Multiplayer is competitive only with no co-op modes available. Action takes place over 16 different maps that support between 16 and 18 players. Six different game types are available ranging from standard deathmatch to more objective based modes that are reminiscent of bombing runs and assault. And similar to Halo 3 each game type can be further customized with various options to increase longevity. One of the modes available is known as "Hardcore" in this mode you have no HUD, and bullets deliver more damage to give a more realistic feel.

Finding matches in Modern Warfare is again similar to Halo 3. It uses a lobby system where you can group up with some friends and go between matches together. You can also search for custom games that are unranked. Both the PS3 and 360 version feature the same matchmaking system, with the only difference being the 360 version uses Microsoft's TrueKill metric to aid in bringing players of similar skill level together.

Version details

Infinity Ward stresses that all three versions of the game are nearly identical. If you have a top of the line PC, then that version will look the best, but for the most part they all look the same running at a constant 60 frames per second. The PS3 version supports both USB and Bluetooth headsets, but does not support the upcoming Dualshock 3 rumble, with no plans in the future.

There is also the Cracker Launcher, which rapidly fires firecrackers into the air, the Golden Hammer, which is an upraged regular hammer that is faster, does mroe damage, and allows the user to float over open air, and the Banana Peel, which shockingly enough trips up foes when thrown on the ground.
